PrepL is an online and interactive licensing course and test introduced by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.

It can be completed in your own time, at your own pace, on any device (smartphone, tablet or computer).

The plan is that it will eventually replace the Written Road Rules Test. However, currently you are able to choose which test you complete to obtain your Learner Licence.

PrepL requirements and costs

You need to be at least 15 years 11 months old to enrol in PrepL. This allows you to complete the course materials and final test before you turn 16 at which point you can receive your licence in the mail.

PrepL eliminates the need for you to attend a transport and motoring customer service centre.

You will need an internet connection with a download speed of 1.5mbps (test your speed now) and at least a 1.5GB data allowance to consume all course materials.

If this is not available to you, you still have the option of attending a service centre and completing the Written Road Rules Test.

You will need to prove your identity using the online portal and pay the required enrolment, course, and (if successful) licensing fees.

The PrepL course costs the same as the Written Road Rules Test.

Completing PrepL

Once you enrol in PrepL you have 12 months to complete the course (which is plenty of time).

The estimate provided is that the course should take in total 4-6 hours to complete.

Setting aside a day or two should allow you to complete the course if you focus.

You progress through PrepL by consuming the content (interactive activities, videos and scenarios) and then completing embedded assessments that unlock new areas of course material.

The (broad) topics covered are:

  • Your driving attitude
  • Signs and rules
  • Sharing the road with others

There is a final assessment that you are required to pass to complete the course.

It’s ok if you don’t pass this final test on your first attempt.

You don’t have to pay another fee, you just have to wait 24 hours before sitting the test again.

Use this time wisely: go over the material again so it’s fresh for your next try.

NOTE: Getting someone to complete the test for you comes with serious consequences. You may be banned from enrolling for 6 months and the person who sat the test for you can receive a fine of more than $5,200.

On top of this, it’s very important that you understand the road rules. Getting someone to pass the test for you puts you and those around you in danger when you drive as you won’t know what people need to know to be a competent and confident driver.
